Pepper Palm

Materials: Baltic Birch and wooden Hand clamps When I created this piece I was in a place of disharmony and confusion. I knew my time at Watkins was coming to an end and it was taking a toll on me. I felt my sense of community was dissipating. So amongst all of those emotions came this piece. (Tri-) The three main curves can be referred to as people or opportunities and how they are all interlaced. 

Material: 2x4s I love using inexpensive materials and making dope pieces! This piece was a headache though. I made so many repetitive cuts and figuring out the arch was a lot of work. In the end it was worth it! This piece was roughly 5 feet wide and 3.5 feet tall. The meaning.... pretty literal. It has to do with birth (fetal position, water, cleansing, purity, etc), life (the ground we walk on, the plants we plant and consume,the things we see, memories we make, etc) and everything in between. 

This is a vague step by step of a coffee and side table set made of inexpensive materials while remaining stylish. . Fnished product in residence's home.

I absolutely adore small spaces. I love the challenge they bring and creativity they spark when trying to accommodate a small living space. When working under conditions like these, I try to stay as minimal as possible. You don't want to crowd the room with unnecessary furniture and decor. Try to keep your colors light and add in a pop of color for flair. This coffee table is osb, cherry, and birch. I absolutely love the different wood chips and colors in the osb board. (coffee Table Top) Twin bed couch made of 2x4s and osb board I love making little make shift tables whenever I need them. So I always keep wooden hand clamps around.

This is my first attempt at bending wood. I used the kerfing technique to bend my wood. After that I set  one side with clamps, ( as a signature element). Not sure if the clamps were necessary, but at the time it felt right.

I’ve been working with wood constantly for about two years now.  Within those two years, I have discovered that there are some woods that work better with what I’m doing.  I love using multiple types of wood in each piece that I create, but I noticed that I have a simple kind of love for Baltic Birch. It’s consistently throughout every piece of mine. A key element in my work is how the wood bends when tension is applied.  There’s a personal systematic way that I clamp and cut each wood piece so that they can respond to each other to create that tension.  It’s quite fun and interesting how, depending on the space and/or wooden forms, that this tension can vary in shape and structure. Instead of manipulating something drastically to become a thing that it is not, I push for letting that thing be just what is. This is why I love working with wood. The sail Form follows Function untitled These are just small experiments that just come to me when i'm working in the shop. I think it's important to play around and to just let things happen naturally. You'll have more fun, I surely do. 

This piece I did in the fall of 2014. It used many of the concepts that I use in my other wood pieces with the exception of the clamps.
